Rottweilers were developed by crossing native dogs with the herding dogs that accompanied the Roman legions in the German town of Rottweil. Known as a butcher's dog, it's master and property, the Rottweiler was used for herding and guarding the cattle. The Rottwieler was officially recognized in 1910 as a police dog in Germany. Today the Rottweiler is a guardian, companion, and working dog. This powerful breed has a short, black, thick coat with tan or mahogany markings. The Rottweiler grows to a height of 23-27" and weighs 90-110 pounds. The breed is protective, dominant, steady, and obedient.
Official Recognition: FCI Group 2, AKC Group 3 - Working Dogs, CKC Group 3 - Working Dogs, KC Non-Sporting - Working Group, ANKC Group 6 - Utility. Rottweilers are recognized by the CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, and NZKC. Rottweilers can be used for guarding, police work, tracking, herding, competitive obedience, and other activities. Breeders and owners distinguish between two types of the breed. The first type, the German Rottweiler is bred for work. However, working qualities in American Rottweilers are not stressed as much while breeding the dogs. The breed tends to live up to 12 years. The dogs are generally robust, yet can have inheritance diseases. Rottweilers can suffer from hip dysplasia and do not do well in hot weather.
